YES IT’S TRUE! We’ve done a lot of incredibly fucking exciting things this year, but right now nothing makes us happier than releasing into the wilderness a song written with none other than Mr Neil Gaiman himself.
We were also incredibly lucky to have artwork created by the gracious, generous and wonderfully talented Mark Buckingham. We met Mark in August when we were all crashing at Neil and Amanda’s mansion-esque digs during the Edinburgh Fringe, along with a transient crew of other musicians, artists, writers and the occasional circus performer. We were working on the song with Neil, asked Mark if he wanted to do the cover art for us, he said yes, we quietly squeed with excitement, and now we have THIS:
Apart from our rad collaborators, it’s also exciting for us because it’s the first single from ‘Somewhere Under The Rainbow’ – our first grown-up studio LP, (that we’ll be putting out somewhere around February 2012), which we’ve just wrapped up studio recording for. BUT we’re not done yet! Aside from the whole process of mixing/mastering/designing/pressing/printing/figuring-out-how-the-hell-to-independently-distribute-a-record-you’re-convinced-will-be-so-awesome-you-want-the-whole-world-to-hear-it-but-don’t-want-to-sell-your-soul-to-a-label and then TOURING THE HELL OUT OF IT… we’re still recording a few bits and pieces on the road (while touring with Amanda and Neil for their West Coast performances), including recording on a fucking Wurlitzer in a bookstore in Long Beach.
We got to play this instrument the night before at a small gig in this very same bookstore (Gatsby Books, owned by the amazing Sean and Alisha, who apart from owning an impressively awesome independent bookstore, are also very spunky and generous. If you’re around the Long Beach area, go to their store and buy lots of books) and it was love at first sight.
We’ll also be recording a few extra vocals in our hotel room in San Francisco, which we’re heading to right now in the tour bus with Amanda & Neil’s tour manager, Jaron (@jaronsound on Twitter – he’s a one-man tour manager, producer, sound engineer, indie label and all-round DUDE. We intend to squeeze his brain as much as possible – his knowledge of important-shit-for-a-band-to-know is truly, truly impressive. He’s also more than a little bit terrifying. I mean, the guy is lovely but by God you would not want to be the poor venue schmuck that tries to screw him over for gig expenses.
So yeah. San Francisco. We have three glorious days there, during which we’ll try to do SOME sightseeing and hanging out (including taking Ange and Adam to Martuni’s, where we hijacked the piano and made friends with a room of gay men and music students, referenced in Maintain the Madness) in amongst playing two shows, recording, rehearsing, emailing, and SENDING OUT THE PRE-ORDERS for Holes! Good times! So if YOU were one of the lucky and presciently-minded gentlefolk who pre-ordered, you’ll be getting your copy in the mail soon! Yay!!
Also in San Fran, we’ll be debuting ‘Holes’ as a fully written and rehearsed song – different from the handful of small gigs that we’ve experimented on.
So. If you haven’t already, go HERE to listen and get your copy now.
